Locals vandalized the Dewahi Gonahi Municipal Office in Rautahat on July 27 after the rice purchased for Covid-19's relief distribution to the poor, helpless and Dalit community rotted in the warehouse. The rice was buried by digging a ditch on July 26. The locals locked the mayor Dharmendra Patel inside the office, pelted stones and vandalized the municipal office, alleging the municipality of throwing the relief materials at times when the people are starving.

Police fired four rounds of tear gas to control the protest. However, Mayor  Patel said that out of 400 bags of rice kept in the warehouse, 20 bags were soaked with water and rotted. He said that the windows of the stored museum were opened and the rice was soaked and rotted. He said that 2,000 families were received relief during the pandemic and the remaining rice was stored.
