Locals padlocked the Kamalamai municipality-5, landfill site on November 16, claiming that due to lack of proper waste management, bad smell has spread in the village, health problems have arisen and locals have not been given priority in employment. The demonstrators have submitted a 15-point memorandum to the municipality two weeks ago with a demand to solve the problem. Chairman of the Kalika Community Forest Users Group, Akkal Bahadur Rana, said that they were forced to padlock in the agitation as their demands were ignored. Kwandrekholsi falls in the forest area of the Kalika community.
Residents of Naya Basti, Madhutar, Ranikhola, Jaryotar, Dhakrebas, Karagar, Kalikatar, Panchkanya toll, and other areas have been directly affected due to lack of proper management of landfill site, said Chairman Rana. Locals allege that the forest area was started indiscriminately, violating the agreement to dump garbage at the bottom of Quandre Kholsi.
The locals demanded that the sanitation workers working in the waste management area should be kept from the landfill affected areas and get free health insurance, drinking water, and education should be ensured for the citizens of the landfill affected areas.
According to Yagya Bahadur Thapa, chairman of the Lower Ranikhola Toll Development Association, the drinking water source is polluted due to the smoke and dust of the garbage burnt at the landfill site. Chief of the Environment Branch of Kamalamai Municipality Sagar Kumar Dhakal says that the demands raised by the residents of the landfill site are being met. He said that the locals have been called for resolving the issue through talks.
