Led by Gajendra Bahadur Mahat, Federal MP of CPN-Maoist Center, residents of Jumla staged a symbolic demonstration in front of the central office of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) demanding the expansion of electricity access to the national transmission system in the Jumla district by playing musical instruments on December 7. The team of Jumla district residents demanded to invest in the development of electrification and development of hydropower projects in the district through a letter. The team had pasted the letter on the wall after Executive Director Kulman Ghising could not be reached for comment.
According to Mahat, the locals had to stage demonstrations in the NEA to draw the attention of the people after they repeatedly demanded the expansion of electrification in the district which was deprived of all the infrastructures for development. The demonstrators have made 6 sentence demands.
As Jumla is rich in water resources, there is a written demand to study the feasibility of hydropower and to move ahead with the construction of the already studied hydropower project. In Jumla, the power supply of the national transmission system reached for the first time in 2078 BS. NEA had constructed a 75 km 11 KV distribution line to provide electricity to the district.
Residents of the district have been forced to live in darkness as most of the micro-hydro projects have been washed away by the floods this year.
