2021-12-09

Karnali, Jajarkot, Tribeni Nalagad

The teachers and staff of the Grade Teaching program at Nalgad municipality of Jajarkot padlocked the municipality office on December 9, with a demand to provide the increased salary by the Nepal government which amounts to fifteen thousand rupees. The budget presented by the last KP Oli government had increased the minimum salary of the teachers and staff of the Grade Teaching program to 15000 rupees.  As per that provision, 7000 had to be added by the local government with additional 2000 rupees from the federal government to make the amount 15000. However, the Nalgad municipality denied adding 7000 rupees stating their budgetary constraints, which led to strike from the employees.

The municipality administration mentioned the policy restriction which bars spending the budget in financial equalization to use for paying the salary and allowances as per the letter circulated by the Ministry of Finance.

The protesting teachers said that they will continue their protest until the demands are met. The teachers and staff padlocked the administrative office along with the education, youth, and sports division's office and staged a sit-in for an hour on December 9. They also mentioned picketing the municipal office and not allowing other staff to enter the office. Likewise, their protest program includes staging a sit-in by tying a black ribbon on their arms at the municipality office on Friday, shutting down all the schools in the municipality on Sunday, submitting a memorandum to all the 13 wards and closing their operation on Monday, shutting down the schools within the municipality for an infinite time from Tuesday and boycotting all other activities of the municipality. The teachers and staff are currently receiving  8000 rupees per month along with the increased 2000 rupees from this fiscal year.
