A police sub-inspector was caught red-handed taking bribe from a restaurant at Dhamboji Chok in Banke district on Friday night. A team from the Kohalpur-based regional office of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) arrested Sub-Inspector Suman Kharel of Banke District Police Office as he was receiving Rs 25,000 from one Yubaraj Thakuri. Kharel had allegedly demanded the sum to ‘settle’ a case against Thakuri’s brother. Kharel had arrested Thakuri’s brother Yudhir on theft charge last year. Six other plain-clothed officers who were also on the scene were suspended after they tried to stop the CIAA team from arresting Kharel. Seven police personnel, including two sub-inspectors, were also held for investigation. Dhurba Bahadur Dangi, spokesperson of CIAA regional office, said the plain-clothed police team had obstructed the anti-graft body from doing its job. Senior Superintendent of Police Rajendra Shrestha at the Bheri Zonal Police Office said six officers were suspended and seven others were put under investigation after it was established that they barred the CIAA team from arresting Kharel. Although Bheri Zonal Police Office has said that Kharel was arrested while accepting bribe , his colleagues have said that he was framed by Thakuri. They said that Thakuri, who is a friend of Kharel’s, had left the money for safekeeping. It was not a bribe , they claimed. Kharel said that he had to take the money after Thakuri left behind the cash and exited from the restaurant. नेपालगन्
