A rape victim in Pidari-9 of Sarlahi district has been compelled to seek the help of the right activists after she was denied justice due to the apathy of the police. On Monday night, 23 June, 45-year-old Chathiya Musahar was raped by Mahendra Majhi when she was alone at her home. The perpetrator had raped her and attacked her with a knife. She sustained deep injuries in the forehead due to the attack and gained consciousness only two days after the incident. Her brother and relative Gitadevi had gone to area police office Haripur to lodge a complaint immediately after the victim gained consciousness and told them about the rape. They were returned by inspector Raj Kumar Karki who demanded proof of rape from the victim adding insult to injury of the poor victim. Upon growing pressure from the right activist, police arrested the accused Mahendra Majhi but the locals believe that police are still lingering on punishing the accused. Inspector Raj Kumar Karki claimed that police have not been able to punish the arrested because they could not prove that he had raped the woman. Police released the accused after holding him in custody for only a night. Locals are fearful as the rape accused is now roaming freely in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, INSEC Sarlahi has demanded justice for the rape victim. The representative of INSEC said that most of the incidents of rape occurring in poorer communities of Sarlahi never reach the police, and even if the cases reach police, police are not found to be taking them seriously.
