Lack of doctor affects maternity service in Darchula

2015-08-10

Sudurpashchim, Darchula, Mahakali

Janaki Dhami of Rapla-8 reached District Hospital, Darchula last week for maternity service. As she had to undergo a cesarean, her family panicked. When she reached the free maternity center, the door was locked. The operation room which came into effect three weeks ago had been shut forcing her to go to Pithauragadh in Indian bazaar. Though the free maternity service building is with facilities, there is lack of human resources at the end of its three week of operation. Two babies were born through cesarean section in a week. Former public health inspector Birhari Rai calls it bad luck. "Though there is modern building with all equipments, lack of human resources is in itself bad luck." The maternity center was locked after contract of Dr. Nabin Chandra Bhatta who was working there ended in mid-July. Dr. Bhatta is the only medical person to provide the service in the district. He left the district for 'studies' after his contract ended. The district residents who were happy after the operation building started three weeks ago have become sad. Pregnant women have to visit Indian side to avail the maternity service after the operation center shut down.
