Students padlock engineering college, set chairs on fire

2015-08-29

Province 1, Sunsari, Dharan, Ward 9

Purwanchal Engineering Campus has once again been padlocked by students of electrical and computer engineering faculties. Earlier, they had protested by burning tires and chairs of various administrative and teaching staff as well. A team of Armed Police Force (APF) had entered the premises to control the chaotic situation. The agitating students have demanded a proper learning environment at the campus, with the availability of required infrastructure, enough teachers, and classrooms. With the final examinations set to be from September 18, the administration department is scrambling for ways to end the protests. The students said that they had been complaining about a lack of basic requirements such as adequate books in the library, a well-equipped laboratory, and enough teachers for the past couple of years. Yogesh Ghimire, a student of the college, said, "The college administration looks the other way whenever we raise the issues." Meanwhile, Vinay Lal Shrestha, the head of the engineering department, said, "The college has been trying to address the grievances of the students and that it was unnecessary for them to protest aggressively," he said.
