The local administration has declared Kalaiya of Bara district as a riot-hit zone after the situation became increasingly tense throughout on Wednesday.
The District Administration Office Bara said that Kalaiya was declared a riot-hit zone after the protest and a general strike called by United Democratic Madheshi Front turned violent with each passing day.
The local administration also latched curfew in the region effective from 8 pm on Wednesday to 7 am Thursday.
One protester had died on Tuesday when police opened fire at demonstrators who defied curfew to vandalize public properties and pelt stones at the former in different parts of Kalaiya.
The government has authorized the Chief District Officer to declare areas as riot-hit zones to contain unrest and maintain law and order. If need be, they are also authorized to deploy the Army. Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) has demanded a judicial probe into the death of 22-year-old Hifazat Miya of Kalaiya-10, who was shot dead by police in Kalaiya on September 2."Police have fired more shots at him after he fell on his arm," said Rambabu Kumar Yadav, leader of the front. "We demand an immediate investigation and immediate suspension of DSP Binod Sharma."At least 55 protesters and 17 policemen were injured in a clash on September 2. The body of the deceased has been kept at Kalaiya Hospital without a postmortem. Meanwhile, various human rights organizations in the district monitored the incident on Wednesday and took information from the concerned police-administration, the victim's family, and the agitating party.
