Update-----The curfew imposed in Birgunj for the past four days has been lifted for two hours on Thursday. According to Anuj Bhandari, Assistant Chief District Offier of the District Administration Office, the curfew has been lifted from 5 pm to 7 pm. The Administration said that the curfew has been lifted to allow locals to buy essential goods. It has been learned that the curfew will be resumed from 7 pm for an indefinite period. Normal life in the district has been affected for the past 19 days due to indefinite bandh and curfew.
Updated------The tense Birgunj was deserted on Wednesday morning. Earlier, a protester was killed on Monday when police opened fire on a Madhes-centric movement. The protesters broke the curfew and set fire to police posts and government vehicles in different parts of the city. Dilip Chaurasia, 25, of Manyari in Birgunj-28 was shot dead while protesting in Radhemai Tol during the curfew. He was shot in the back and died at Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital. The indefinite curfew imposed by the local administration from 4 pm on Monday has been lifted from 5 pm to 7 pm today. The local administration has declared Birgunj as a riot-affected area from Tuesday and mobilized a large number of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force on the main roads and tolls of Birgunj on Wednesday.
