Kailali schools to reopen from Sunday despite curfew and protests

2015-09-06

Agitating parties and groups in Kailali district agreed to let schools resume classes despite the ongoing protests over some provisions of the draft statute. Various stakeholders including student unions were piling pressures on protesters not to disturb academic activities. Schools of the district had remained closed for over a month owing to protests carried out by various parties and subsequent violent clashes between protesters and police personnel. But, leaders of protesting parties, human rights activities, representatives of student unions and lawyers signed an agreement at the District Administration Office (DEO) today to open schools from tomorrow. District Education Officer Ganesh Bahadur Singh said the signatories have agreed to withdraw all programmes to close schools and academic institutions and not to affect academic activities during their protests. Despite the agreement, it is unlikely that schools in Tikapur Municipality and neighbouring villages would not open as the DAO has imposed indefinite curfew there. Meanwhile, the Chief District Officer Mohan Chapagain said schools in Dhangadi will open from 6 am to 11 am everyday as the DAO has continuously clamped curfew from 11 am to 4 pm everyday.  With this, the schools will be open from 7 to 11 am in Dhangadhi which is under the curfew order. In other parts, the schools will open in normal time. However, the schools will remain shut in Tikapur.
