Four including toddler died in police firing in Rupandehi

[Updated] Three people died on the spot at Bethari of Rupandehi district as Madhesi protestors clashed with the police while a four-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital Tuesday evening. The three deceased have been identified as Bindu Lakaul, Ranjana Singh Chhetri, and Raj Kumar Barai of Bethari. All three of them sustained bullet injuries during the clash. Meanwhile, Kundan Kumar Patel, who sustained injuries from rubber bullets, died while receiving treatment at Universal Medical College in Bhairahawa. A clash had ensued after protestors pelted stones at police vehicles escorting three trucks loaded with various commodities toward Bhairahawa. Police resorted to firing teargas canisters at the protestors. As the protestors refused to retreat, police opened fire in the air and then used rubber bullets at the demonstrators. Four police personnel were also injured in the incident, according to the police. Meanwhile, the local administration of Rupandehi in the evening clamped the curfew order till 6 am the next morning.

update: All the people killed in the Bethari incident are found to be civilians. A meeting of the District Security Committee (DSC) held on September 16 concluded that those dying and getting injured at Bethari on September 15 were those coming for shopping. Armed Police Force opened fire after the vehicles they were escorting were attacked. Four people including a 4-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl. The bodies were received by the relatives after postmortem. Police said that one of the deceased could be protesters while the locals claimed all were civilians saying they were engaged in business in a weekly market day. The deceased were identified as Chandan Kumar Patel, 4, Ram Kumar Barai, 40, Bindu Lakaul, 45, of Gonaha VDC-6, and Ranjana Singh Chhetri, 14, of Silautiya VDC of Marchawar VDC. Among them, the boy was shot at his home while Lakaul was shot when he was in his shop. A woman taking refuge in Lakaul's shop was shot injured. She is being treated at Bhairahawa Medical College Teaching Hospital (BMCTH). More than five people were injured in the incident. They include Sagati Murau, 50, of Hatibangai VDC-1, Dipendra Sahani, 21, of Mainhiya VDC, Nandani Pandey, 30, of Gonaha VDC-6, Purnabasi Dhobi, 60, of Mainhiya VDC-6, and Saraswati Murau, 30, of Hatibangai VDC-1. There are others with minor injuries. All the injured are being treated at BMCTH, Bhairahawa. Among them, Shohawati's situation is said to be critical. Rupandehi Police chief Rajendra Dhakal said 20 policemen sustained minor injuries. The members of DSC monitored the site and met the families of the victims.
