India halts supply of petro-products, corporation drivers thrashed

2015-09-24

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has said it will not supply petroleum products until the Tarai unrest is settled at the political level. Even though India says that it has not been able to supply petroleum products owing to the unrest on the Nepali side, it has already staged a blockade. "Come only after talking to the higher level," a highly placed source at the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) quoted IOC official as saying. "We have not been able to even bring our oil empty containers from the Indian border," the NOC said, adding, "our drivers' life is at risk. Indian police are trashing them." The supply of petroleum products has been brought to a grinding halt after the IOC, Indian government's company, said they will supply the products only after the Tarai unrest is settled at the political level. Madhesi Front cadres have been stationed at the entry-exit points at the Nepal-India border to show that the supply has been disrupted due to the unrest on the Nepali side. "All the checkpoints have been blocked, the supply has been halted," said the official. It has been already three years since Nepal signed the deal with the India government according to which Nepal cannot purchase petroleum products from other companies. As per the deal on the oil pipeline recently signed with the Indian government, Nepal cannot purchase petroleum products for the next 20 years.
