Human mobility restricted across Belahiya Indo-Nepal border point

Security personnel of both nations has tightened human and vehicular movement at the Indo-Nepal border point in Sunauli. They said they beefed up security provisions considering worsened security situations. Members of the general public were stopped from crossing the border citing their own protection on Friday. Security has been beefed up in the area following a violent incident on Wednesday, said SSP Ganesh KC. According to Police Inspector Rabindra Babu Regmi of Belahiya Area Police Office, only tourists, patients, bus, and train passengers who already had travel tickets were allowed to cross the border. A clash had erupted between security personnel and the Madhesi Front agitators on Wednesday near the Belahiya border point. Subsequently, a youth was beaten black and blue by the agitators in the no man’s land. Krishna Chettri Bista of Bhalwari, Rupandehi was attacked while his fingers were cut off in the no man’s land on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, it has been learned that the leaders and agitators are sheltering on the other side of the border. Besides the attack on Bista on Wednesday, at least five women were reportedly misbehaved by locals on the Indian site even before Wednesday. Likewise, a youth from Gulmi was reportedly robbed of Rs 160,000 on Indian soil while he was returning to Nepal for the Dashain festival. Locals of Rupandehi district said they were growing anxious and furious towards the latest developments in the region. Rupandehi Chief District Officer, Bishnu Parsad Dhakal, expressed concerns about the use of Indian soil against Nepal. Despite reports of violence, dozens of cargo trucks entered Nepal overnight yesterday via the point, according to police.
