UDMF announces 11-day Tarai-centric protest programs

2015-12-18

The United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has announced an 11-day protest program ruling out the possible deal with the government in the capital. Organizing a press conference at the party office of the Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) in the capital on Friday, the alliance said it would hit the streets in the Tarai region as it did not see any possibility of agreement with the government in the capital. In the conference, the UDMF has announced additional protest programs starting December 20 until 30 to make the Madhes movement decisive. The protest programs will include setting copies of constitution on fire, holding torch rally, stick rally, gatherings in the districts and disruption of regular activities in the Tarai-based government offices. The UDMF said it will also not allow ministers, government representatives and lawmakers to enter into the Tarai region. Talking to journalists TMDP Chairman Mahantha Thakur accused the government of not being serious in all the talks held with the alliance. As many as 15 meetings have already been held so far between the UDMF and the government to sort out the Madhes unrest. "We did not find the government serious despite our maximum flexibility that we maintained during the talks," said Thakur, adding, "We will not hold talks with the government in the capital from now onward, but in the Madhes." He also stated that the UDMF will not agree to the amendment bill to be delivered in the parliament, terming it 'conspiratorial.'
