UDMF formally postpones border blockade

Bowing down to immense pressure from several quarters, the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UMDF) on Monday formally announced end to four-month long blockade at border entry points. Issuing a statement, UDMF said it has put off sit-ins at border checkpoints, general strikes and closure of government offices keeping current situation of the country, need of people and their suggestions into consideration. “Other forms of protest will continue,” front said in the statement. Talking to Republica, front leader Mahendra Raya Yadav said they are preparing to further intensify the protest by analyzing weaknesses and errors. On Friday, locals had removed the blockade at the Nepal-India border checkpoint in Birgunj which had obstructed fuels and other essential supplies coming in via the Birgunj-Raxaul border checkpoint.
