Police probing witchcraft-related attack

2016-02-18

Province 1, Morang, Rangeli

(updated) Police in Rangeli, Morang, are investigating witchcraft-related violence in which a woman was assaulted and force-fed human faeces by her husband and in-laws on February 18. Avichandra Rijal, the inspector at Rangeli Area Police Office, said four persons-- the woman’s husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and a so-called shaman from Sunsari-- were being held in investigative custody. The 23-year-old woman was attacked during a pooja. Inspector Rijal said the woman was reportedly beaten and made to eat human faeces by her husband and his family members on the direction of the self-professed shaman. The woman returned to her parents with her infant son after the incident. Women rights activist Jayanti Sangpang Rai said the woman’s in-laws had tried to get rid of her soon after her marriage. She had been assaulted in the past as well, Rai added.
