Cleaning workers of Biratnagar Metropolitan City have stopped collecting garbage for the past two days. The workers started an agitation after the jointly run Garbage Management Project run by Biratnagar Metropolitan City and Waste Management Group Nepal fired some workers during the Corona Epidemic. The workers are protesting against the decision of the project to fire half of their employees. They expressed their discontent with the forced dismissal and also said that they have been doing the cleaning job for years and during the lockdown, it has been difficult to get any other job. They were protesting saying that their livelihood was taken away. Sikandar Marik, the Chairman of the Malik toll Association accused the Waste Management Project of not even providing health insurance to their cleaning staff and dismissing the workers during the Corona Epidemic. However, Devi Acharaya the Head of Waste Management Project, Biratnagar said that since all the hotels, markets, and schools were closed due to the lockdown it was difficult for the institution to pay the salaries of all their employees. She informed that the company was facing difficulty in providing service facility to their employees and they have also been incurring a monthly loss of Rs 1 million for the last five months due to the lockdown. Since 2073 BS the Waste Management Project has been managing garbage in Biratnagar. The workers confirmed to not going back to their work until their demand for giving daily work to all the employees is met.
