Workers of the former king's tea garden in Jhapa on strike

Workers of Himalaya-Mahalakshmi tea garden in Damak, Jhapa are on a strike since May 5 demanding timely payment of their salaries and provision of other facilities. The garden, owned by the former king, is under the management of the Solti Group. The agitating workers had stopped their work from May 2.

Since 2019, Solti Group allowed Manoj Agrawal, an Indian businessman, to operate the tea garden on a lease. Although the government increased the wages of the workers from 17 July 2075, the workers of Himalaya-Mahalakshmi tea garden allege the management of not providing the wages accordingly. The workers are demanding an additional payment of Rs. 5 lakhs and 36 thousand.
