The laborers working at the Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Multi-purpose project have agitated demanding more facilities and stopping the ongoing construction. They demanded the payment and other facilities based on the district rate analysis. The construction work of office building, employee quarter, and other physical infrastructures are being carried out at Kamalamai municipality-2 Kusumtar of Sindhuli district after the Chinese company named China Overseas Engineering (COVEC) got the contract 2 months back.
The laborers complained that only 735 rupees is provided as remuneration for 8 hours of work per day which is less compared to the 1000 rupees fixed by the rate analysis of the district. As per the statistics of COVEC, there are 320 people working in the project including 110 unskilled labor, 50 skilled masons, 8 mechanical workers, 20 operators, 7 welders, 4 translators, other official staff, and drivers.
The agitated laborers presented a memorandum to their employer demanding the payment as per the district rate, providing payment equivalent to 1.5 hours for 1 hour of overtime work, provision of overtime also during Saturdays, festivals, and other government holidays, management of Dashain bonus, coverage of medical expenses and not canceling the attendance on medical reasons.
The engineer of the project Ravi Shakya said that the contractor company and laborers are discussing the term of agreement and will be able to come to agreement in one/two days.
