Hearing on Col Lama's criminal charges begins

The hearing on the criminal case lodged against Colonel Kumar lama for allegedly torturing detainees during Maoist insurgency in the Army barracks has begun in Central Criminal Court at Old Baily on June 6. Lama has been charged with torturing two Nepalese citizens during the Maoist armed insurgency and breaching the UN’s treaty on Torture and international jurisdiction. However, Lama has been denying the charges against him. Previously, the hearing process of Lama was extended because of not getting a bilingual person. The hearing process was commenced again with a bench of Criminal Court Justice Swini. The jury that comprises distinguished personalities has a maximum of 11 members and the hearing will begin at Central Criminal Court. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa had urged the British Government to release Lama during his London visit last year. Lama who was in Sudan as part of the UN’s peacekeeping mission had been arrested in London when he visited his family members living in the British Capital in 2013. Lama, if convicted guilt in hearing, will have to serve 20 years of imprisonment according to news agencies.
