Sit-In Held Asking for Saving Gangamaya

Kathmandu/September 28 The people of Phujel VDC, Gorkha, students, conflict victims and human rights activists have held a sit-in in front of the Bir Hospital on September 28 asking the government to save the life of Gangamaya Adhikari. Adhikari, of Phujel VDC-7, Gorkha has been on hunger strike since October 24, 2013 demanding action against the killers of her younger son, Krishna Prasad Adhikari. The doctors say Gangamaya’s situation is deteriorating. Her husband Nanda Prasad who was in hunger strike along with Gangamaya died on September 22. The sit-in was organized to pay homage to Nanda Prasad and to ask the government to save Gangamaya’s life. The participants of the protest held placards with slogans asking to save life of Gangamaya, questioning the democracy, existence of the government among others. Speaking at the program, INSEC chairperson Subodh Raj Pyakurel appealed to people exert pressure on the government to save Gangamaya. He also urged the people not to elect the leaders with criminal mentality as justice is dependable on those who are on power. Informing that a walk from Kathmandu to Phujel of Gorkha had been planned, he urged all the justice-loving people to attend the walk. Speaking on behalf of the victims’ families, Sushila Tiwari accused the political parties of conniving to murder her maternal uncle. “The state has killed by uncle and trying to kill aunt and cousin. Nanda Prasad’s body should be accepted by the state”. Other participants declared that a struggle against injustice and movement to get justice had been launched and urged all the students, professionals, journalists, human rights defenders and independent civilians to support the cause. The sit-in was joined by former NHRC commissioner Sushil Pyakurel, INSEC Mid Regional coordinator Krishna Gautam and conflict victims Gyanendra Raj Aaran and Janak Raut among others. Bibek Dhung
