Conflict victims stage protest ahead of govt’s consultations

2020-01-13

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

A group of victims of the decade-long armed conflict and their families staged a demonstration at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu on Monday morning, protesting the government’s plan to consult them about proposed amendments to the transitional justice law. The demonstrators have claimed the consultations will be superficial, intransparent and controlled.

Staging the protest, the demonstrators said the government was preparing to appoint new officials of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission for Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons based on their political affiliations.

The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs is organising simultaneous consultations in various parts of the country today. The ministry says a consultation lasts for around three hours, but Bhagiram Chaudhary, who led the demonstration, says it is too short.

“This is just a drama and we conclude that the government cannot collect real suggestions of the victims from it,” he claims.
