HR Defenders Facing Risks for Raising Conflict-related Violation

Human rights defenders have said that they are facing risks and challenges for raising incidents of human rights violations committed during the decade-long conflict. Speaking to a team of European Union Working Group (EUWG) who arrived in Dailekh on February 6, human rights defenders said that they faced political pressure for raising incidents of violence against woman and caste-based discrimination. The district based rights defenders said that the local administration stresses on reconciliation rather than providing legal support to victims. They also complained that the concerned agencies are not serious in issues related to women and children. The team of EUWG comprised of INSEC Executive Director Bijaya Raj Gautam, INSEC Regional Coordinator Shiva Khakurel, representatives of Denmark, Finnish Embassy and UN Resident Coordinator's Office, NHRC. INSEC ED Gautam informed that the team had arrived in Dailekh to take stock of the situation of the human rights defenders in the district. Representatives of human rights organizations, political parties, Bar Association, FNJ, local peace committee, conflict victims attended the program. The EUWG team also met with Homnath Thapaliya, CDO of Dailekh.
