Families of mass killing await justice

Families of eight Maoist cadres who were killed in a masse in Saunepani of Chhang VDC-9 have demanded action against those involved in the incident. Speaking at the 15th anniversary of the incident organized in various parts of the districts, the victim's families expressed regret on lack of action against the perpetrators. The Unified Security Force had surrounded and killed unarmed Maoist cadres Bharat Chandra Adhikari of Risti VDC-1, his wife Kalawati Adhikari, Kalawati Paudel of Purkot VDC-6, Santoshi Baral of Jamdi in Khairenitar VDC-6, Ban Bahadur Kumar of Shymagha VDC-3, Gita BK of Khairenitar VDC-9, Ganesh Pariyar of Ghalechhap in Mirlung VDC-3 and Sandesh of Gorkha on February 5, 2002. Memorial events were organized in Shyamgha, Risti, Mirlung, Khairenitar of Shuklagangdaki, and Purkot by CPN-M Revolutionary in coordination with local martyr's family on February 6. The incident is taken as the one with most casualties suffered by CPN-M during the conflict period in the district. It also drew international attention as one of the incidents of grave violation of human rights. The deceased Santosh and Gita were minors. The security agencies suffered no casualties in this incident. Victim's families complained to the lack of any action against the culprits despite 15 years had passed. They demanded the culprits of extra-judicial killing be brought to justice. Hom Nath Adhikari, father of Bharat Chandra Adhikari demanded action against the security personnel saying that they had killed unarmed Maoist cadres violating the law of war. He expressed concern that the culprits of such serious crimes might get amnesty as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission had not reached them despite its formation. The families of the deceased have received Rs 300,000 each from the government. CPN-M Revolutionary Tanahun Coordinator Atindra Keshare Neupane said that the government should take responsibility for the incident as the incident had taken place as per the instruction and plan of the then government.
